In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 134: Memorable 1990s Commercial Jingles; Bassett's Wild Animal Farm; Famous Leap Day Events; First National Park(2-28-2024)

Some of the most memorable commercial jingles of the 90s. A trip back to Cape Cod's beloved Bassett's Wild Animal Farm. Historical Leap Day events.
Episode 134 takes a trip back to simpler times. First, it begins with a trip back to the days when a petting zoo was popular entertainment. In the time before the Internet and smartphones, young people had fewer options for fun on Cape Cod. One such attraction that is looked back upon fondly is Bassett's Wild Animal Farm in Brewster. Animals both native and foreign to Cape Cod were front and center for generations of kids. Learn the story of that beloved spot.
Simpler times continue with a lot of earworms in the form of some of the best (and a few worst) commercial jingles of the 1990s. We go way Back In the Day and dial up the nostalgia to 11. Do you remember any of these?
Once every four years we get an extra day. Not a warm summer day, but a day nonetheless. This week's Top 5 will share some of the historic events to happen on Leap Day, February 29th.
Of course, there will be a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule focusing on the creation of the very first National Park, Yellowstone.

Las Vegas Gambling Disasters: In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 133

Casinos on The Strip. The airport. The 7-Eleven. A grocery store. Las Vegas and gambling. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. A trip to Sin City typically includes some sort of gambling on The Strip. However, it is a different experience when one is a resident of the city and not a visitor. In this segment from Episode 133 of the podcast, I share some gambling stories from my time living in Las Vegas. These are 100% true and will have you laughing and shaking your head in disbelief. Initial Impressions 2.0 #4: No DMs, Abandoned Shopping Carts, LED Headlights, etc

#4: No DMs

1. I rarely, if ever, accept invitations from people on LinkedIn. I have found out over the past few years that any ‘invite’ you accept is really an invite for them to blast your messages with services you don’t want and didn’t ask for. Just this week I felt bad and added 2 people and within 5 minutes I had messages about optimizing my YouTube channel. I should have known better.

2. Has anyone else noticed people leaving their shopping carts somewhere in the supermarket and then walking far away to grab something and bring it back to their cart? Do they think there’s a force field so that you can only bring your cart to certain areas? I have seen this too many times to count in the last year, it’s really weird.

Hey wait, don't forget your cart!

3. A weird occurrence that happens to me a lot is that I seem to choose the same places on Cape Cod to photograph at the same time of year. This is typically by accident where I’ll see photos of the same place I had just gone in my Facebook memories the same day or the following day. I guess I am a creature of habit without even trying.

I end up at this spot in Centerville, MA nearly every February

4. Getting tens of thousands of views on my blog monthly should be a great achievement. Too bad it’s 99% bots. How do I know this? Because even though my overall view count goes up the view count on any specific posts does not. There should be articles that have tons of views corresponding to all of the general views, right? Yay, thanks bots for making me feel almost successful.

5. Spring can’t come soon enough, the winter blues have taken hold. It’s only partly the weather though. It’s feeling like I’m working twice as hard to get half as far in my content/podcast career, it’s feeling far more isolated since Covid happened, and in the pursuit of my career, it’s growing tired of looking for the ‘right’ person, and the weather, okay it is the weather too.

6. Another business in the same building as my job apparently found a package meant for my boss in their warehouse this week. When was it delivered to the building? November 2022. Pretty much everything was a loss. I don’t know who gets a package anywhere and doesn’t check to make sure it’s theirs, some pretty stupid people there.

Sorry we misplaced your delivery for 15 months.

7. I am now of the age where getting a fancy new electric toothbrush is considered very exciting. I don’t need a luxury car, a super expensive smartphone, or anything like that. A chance to remove 100% more plaque is even better.

8. Since I am back in race training for the first time in nearly 7 years I am starting to have dreams of me running races. Unfortunately, most of the dreams involve me somehow getting lost on the running route. I am hoping this is not a sign of things to come. I don’t need a search party trying to find me like an old person who wandered away from the retirement home.

Race day premonitions?

9. LED headlights are the worst invention ever for vehicles. They literally blind anyone coming in the opposite direction. There has to be a happy medium where headlights are brighter and better but not so much that they put other drivers at risk for their lives.

10. After having a pretty blah day I was walking around Market Basket when I spotted a little girl of maybe 2 staring at me and smiling. I smiled and said hi but she got shy and her parents laughed. That moment instantly made my day 100% better. Thank you to them.

In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 133: The Horror of Red Asphalt; Las Vegas Gambling Disasters; 1980s Teen Movies; Edison Invents the Phonograph(2-21-2024)

A driver's ed film that scarred children of the 1960s. Stories of my time as a degenerate Las Vegas gambler. Some of the best 1980s teen movies, and more.
All of this is front and center on Episode 133 of the podcast.
Las Vegas is called 'Sin City' for a reason. All of the excesses that you could want are within arms reach. Even if you are a resident you cannot escape the pull of some of the vices. During my time living in Vegas in 2000-01 I found out that my major weakness was the lure of gambling. I will share some head-shaking yet hilarious stories of my days as a degenerate gambler.
From laughs to horror. In 1964 a film was created to help scare straight potential new drivers. It was called Red Asphalt and its gory graphic content depicting real traffic accidents is still shocking 60 years later. We go way Back In the Day as I review this unique and terrifying driver's ed film.
From horror to warm and fuzzy nostalgia we look back at some of the best 1980s teen movies this week in the Top 5. Get your Netflix, Hulu, or whatever streaming service you have ready to make a playlist.
There is also a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around Thomas Edison's creation of the phonograph and how the way we consume sound changed forever.

Jolly Jane Toppan: Cape Cod's Angel of Death

At the turn of the 20th century, a series of unspeakable crimes were occurring on Cape Cod and in Southeastern Massachusetts. Dozens of innocent people were murdered by someone they trusted and some even considered family. However, it wasn't until the body count was staggering that the perpetrator was finally apprehended. Nurse Jane Toppan etched her name in infamy by gaining the trust of countless people only to repay them by taking their lives. This is the story of Cape Cod's 'Angel of Death.' Initial Impressions 2.0 #3: Relatively Normal, Hot Dog Skin, Snow Picnic Outside, etc.

#3: Relatively Normal

1. I took a drive to the closest Walmart(a 40-minute drive). While there I did several laps around the store. I think I was taking my time to see if anything Walmart-y would happen. You know what I mean. Sadly I was disappointed as even though it was crowded everyone there was (relatively) normal. Booo.

How I thought Walmart would look.

2. So much respect for the Kansas City Chiefs winning their 3rd Super Bowl in 5 years. Mahomes, Kelce, Andy Reid, they’re all worthy of being considered some of the best ever at their jobs. However...being from New England I just lived through watching the Patriots win 6 Super Bowls and Tom Brady has 7 rings, so any GOAT talk starts and ends with them still at this time.

3. I am at the age where I don’t enjoy driving in the snow, partially because I have a Toyota that doesn’t handle well with more than an inch or two of snow. However, all of that goes out the window if I am already out in the snow driving. Then I need to stop and get as many photos and videos of the weather, to hell with whether I am safe or not. Dedication to the Craft.

4. The first real snow Cape Cod has seen in 2 years and my shoveling experience went like this. Stepped out the front door around 4pm, within 10 seconds the neighbor had a tree fall, land on/near their car, and take their wires down. Luckily our power stayed on. Spent an hour shoveling 6” of heavy cement snow after foolishly doing an hour-long lifting session at the gym in the morning. Then after a beauty of a sunset, a coyote began running back and forth across the road from the woods to a neighbor’s yard and back. Just another story from the Seinfeld episode that is my daily life.

The pink-ish sunset after the snowstorm.

5. Having been out of the dating scene for several years I find myself now indifferent toward Valentine’s Day. I don’t hate it like I did for a while, but I also don’t really care. I hope those who celebrated enjoyed it, I hope those who didn’t celebrate (like me) had a fun Wednesday.

6. Driving in the sun after a snowstorm is tough on the eyes even with sunglasses on. It was so blindingly bright that I was debating wearing a sleeping eye mask and using the Force to drive home from work. Maybe next time.

Use the Force, Luke

7. This week saw the 10th anniversary of the first author event I did for my very first book. It’s still somewhat unbelievable that a shy introverted new author actually had people come out to the Osterville Library to hear him speak about something he worked so hard on. I still remember who was there and all of the moments like it was yesterday. My mother and three sisters were my backbone. My aunt and cousin were the extra sprinkles on the sundae. The topper was the fact that my Grampa, my hero and role model was so proud and so excited for my event that he was actually there before me and was waiting. I made a little video to commemorate that day: First Author Event - 10 Years Later

8. I am actually mildly surprised that people still use tanning beds in 2024 knowing all of the potential dangers. I saw a guy use one at the gym this week. I would think the fact that his skin looks like a three-week-old cooked hot dog might make him think about his choices but nope he must think it looks normal.

Time for another tanning bed session.

9. Have you ever had articles of clothing in your wardrobe that you honestly have no idea of where you got them? I have a couple of pairs of socks that I wear to bed in winter that I think just magically showed up one day in my drawer. I have no clue how I got them, but I do like them so that’s a bonus.

10. Sometimes you have to hold on to the hope/belief that when the time is right whatever you’re waiting for will happen. Whether a career break, a relationship, or something else. Still, as the years keep passing by you also are allowed to wonder if there is a such thing as a ‘right time’ and how long you should keep holding on to hope.
