Initial Impressions 2.0 Blog #23: Don't Drink That, Marathon Car Wash, Serious Rain, etc.

1. Last week I mentioned putting both sunscreen and bug spray on before going for a run. Eventually, I went to wipe sweat from my face with my bug spray-covered arm and practically blinded myself. Well, this week I decided to one-up myself. Rather than take the long way of getting bug spray in my eyes I decided why not just spray it into my eyes and mouth from the start. There were tons of bugs around as I was getting ready for my run and I was in a rush to get that protection on my skin. So much so that I ended up getting in in my left eye and a bit in my mouth. There’s a pre-run tradition I won’t be starting.

2. As a content creator I typically spend most if not all of my free time working on various projects. Podcasts, videos, articles, blogs, etc, all in the hopes of growing my brand. There are times I wish I could do more but then I remember that pretty much all of the successful creators have a team behind them to help with the work, whereas I am just myself. So I think I’m doing alright, except for the whole having no life due to this content work, but oh well.

3. I understand as a writer when pitching a book to literary agents they get loads of submissions. This means that it might take weeks to get a reply, often a rejection, but such is the life of a writer. But when you finally respond after OVER A YEAR that takes the cake. I’d rather you don’t reply at all than give me the lame brush-off after a year. It’s like asking someone out and them waiting over a year to text you ‘No.’

4. While out for a run on the bike path on a hot humid afternoon I saw a really cute girl running toward me. We both smiled and waved and continued in opposite directions. A few minutes later as I slowed down I looked behind me and she was now running toward me. Was this to be a serendipitous moment? No of course not, she waved and smiled as she passed and left me in the dust. I thought about trying to run after her but that was a recipe for falling on my face.

5. While driving I was behind someone going relatively slow. They also seemed skittish, pumping the brakes anytime a vehicle stopped at a crossroad like they thought the other vehicle would t-bone them. I had no idea of the depths of their skittishness though. They needed to turn left down a side street. A car was coming the other way but was several hundred feet away. Rather than turning down the side street like 99% of people would this vehicle waited. They waited what felt like hours but were likely 6-7 seconds. To me, it was the scene in Austin Powers where the man is in front of the approaching steamroller but it is far away. The man just yells for like 15 seconds before getting squished. That was funny this was foolish.

6. When I started the original version of this blog in 2010 my goal was to do some sort of travel writing as my main source of income. Years have passed but my wish is still similar. I would love to drive around the country recording podcasts at various locations. Maybe I can get 5-Hour Energy to finally sponsor me, that was a recurring joke in the original Initial Impressions blog.

7. I went for a long run/walk. I did a loop as far as my route. On the way out I passed a man washing his car in his driveway. Cool, it was a beautiful morning. On the way back I passed the same man still in his driveway, still washing his car. The only problem? My loop was 8 miles and it was a good hour and a half in between seeing the man washing his car. Even at its dirtiest, I might need 45 minutes to thoroughly wash my car. Oh well, maybe he really wanted to savor the feeling?

Are you done yet?

8. I’m torn. I found out that the father of one of my formerly closest friends died. Part of me wants to reach out and check on them. Another part remembers that phones, emails, etc, work both ways. In the nearly 4 years since we last spoke I have lost several family members and friends and didn’t hear Word One. So I remain on the fence as far as being the one yet again who bites the bullet and bridges the gap of reaching out.

9. There was a cloudy humid day this week. It eventually led to some rain in mid-afternoon. I was at a beach and it started coming down. I checked the radar and it was full of reds. I decided to get moving before the worst of it. Little did I know the ‘worst’ was so close and the sky opened up in a downpour the likes of which I’ve rarely seen on Cape Cod. It was like driving through rivers within minutes. Luckily I made it to the supermarket safely and the rain let up a bit to let me head inside...and then the power was out inside the supermarket because of course.

10. We’re headed into the 4th of July week and it has definitely been crazy as far as traffic and the number of less-than-intelligent people behind the wheels of that traffic. That being said I don’t (yet) have that crushing desire for it to be Labor Day Weekend. Maybe I’m mentally and soon to be physically in a better place so it’s not killing me to deal with tourists. Or maybe I’m getting older and don’t feel as good about wanting to skip months of time to get to my favorite time of the year.

In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 150: Listener's Choice - 1988 Pizza Hut Training Video, K-Tel Music Compilations, Discontinued Cereals, Digital Music Origins(6-26-2024)

It's Listener's Choice as we celebrate 150 episodes of the podcast!
All that is a part of this week's show was chosen by you, the listeners.
Episode 150 kicks off with a new edition of the vintage employee training videos segment. This time we are going all the way back to 1988 to find out what goes into making pizzas at Pizza Hut. Special drinking game: Have a drink every time someone says their slogan from the time 'Makin' It Great.'
Long before playlists, mix cd's, or even mixtapes, there was a way to listen to multiple popular songs on the same piece of media. In the 1970s and 1980s compilation albums were the in thing and the company that brought them to you was K-Tel Records. We go way Back In the Day to reminisce about the innovative K-Tel compilations.
This week's Top 5 is sure to make you hungry. So many cereals, so few mornings. Though some cereals have become synonymous with breakfast over the last century even more have come along and faded away just as quickly. We will be looking at some of the discontinued cereals that might be due for a comeback.
Of course, there is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the groundbreaking 1994 digital music download event featuring Aerosmith and CompuServe.

Initial Impressions Blog 2.0: #22 - Lock the Door, Hooters, Parking Lot Geniuses, etc.

1. One of my favorite running routes takes me through a quiet and quaint neighborhood. It eventually abuts a golf course at a cul-de-sac. I like this spot because within 50 feet of the road are a pair of porta potties behind a fence on the golf course. So I use one pretty much every time I go by there. In years of doing this I could honestly count on one hand with fingers left the number of people I’ve seen using one of those porta potties. I walked around the fence and one was locked, the other was not. Of course, the one not locked had someone inside as I flung the door open. Luckily his back was to me. We both kind of laughed and he was cool since he admitted he didn’t lock the door. It was like on The Office when Jim walked in on the preschool teacher in the bathroom because he didn’t lock the door.

2. It’s amazing to see how different weather forecasts can be between 2 websites. Same place, different app, and the temperatures are routinely 6-7 degrees off for the highs. In the winter that big of a discrepancy can mean the difference between snow and rain. It’s the same with precipitation. How much, when it starts, when it ends, or even if there will be any at all. I end up picking whichever seems best and then cheering or booing that site depending on the accuracy.

3. The first heat wave of the season hit the northeast this week. The mid-80s on Cape Cod. Granted on the Cape it’s a good 10 degrees cooler than in Boston but it does take the energy right out of you. All I wanted to do was sit in front of several fans. Oh, I have A/C but I stubbornly try to hold off as long as I can to put it in and then try to take it out as quickly as I can.

4. I am at the point in my life where if I don’t feel a connection with a person I move on. I’m not saying within a few minutes, but after a certain amount of time, you know if you click, or if you’re wasting your and their time. I find it’s better to move on early than drag it out and lead someone on in the hopes of forcing a connection over time. But that’s just me.

5. Note To Self: When microwaving something if the cooking time you are choosing is 3 identical numbers, IE: 5:55, make sure that you press the buttons 3 times because you could end up pressing it 4 times and leaving something in the microwave for far too long. Yes, note to self, that never could have actually happened to me.

Beware

6. One thing I had forgotten that has come back in full force as I’ve started running more is how many vehicles don’t care about runners or cyclists on the road. Some give room as they pass, others don’t move at all. I have had times that if I reached my arm out a passing vehicle would have torn it off. We’re not saying swerve into the other lane into oncoming traffic, but at least make an effort to not kill us as you pass, thanks.

7. I was in a supermarket in the town where I live when a couple walked in. The woman was in a full-on Hooters outfit. Now this is all well and good, I mean I didn’t mind taking a peek. But here’s the thing, the nearest Hooters to where I live is 75 miles away. Maybe they decided to come visit Cape Cod right after she got out of work and she didn’t bother to change out of her work clothes? Halloween is not for 4 months but maybe they were going to a random costume party in late June? Or maybe she just craves attention and decided to wear that outfit inside a supermarket filled with elderly people and children. Your guess is as good as mine.

8. The vast, vast majority of people know how to navigate around a parking lot. It’s not hard, you just need common sense. That being said there are the select few who put their blinker on at the end of a row of spaces like it’s the end of a street. Even worse are those who just drive straight through all of the spaces like they’re not there. I’m sure it’s like a bell curve, tons of normal people in the middle, and those 2 sets of idiots on either end.

9. While running at the local high school track I spotted 2 women walking over. 1 walked onto the track and just stood there, the other was nowhere to be found. It was a little suspicious. I finished running and retreated to a sort of pavilion at the top of the bleachers. The 1 woman was still standing in the same place. Now it was getting weird. That was until I saw the other woman. She had a pair of rollerblades and couldn’t get them on. The other woman helped and then proceeded to lead her around the track helping her skate. I didn’t ask but it seemed like the woman with the roller blades was special needs and the other woman was a friend or relative. It made the whole situation very sweet and I stood and watched for a few minutes before heading home.

10. Speaking of that run I did. It’s that point in the summer when I have to make a choice between sunscreen and bug spray for runs. Well, except for this time. I sprayed sunscreen on my head and bug spray on my arms and legs. Seems pretty straightforward right? That was until I was sweating a lot running and like a fool used my arm to wipe my face and eyes. Yup, bug spray in the eyes. Luckily at that point, nobody else was on the track so when I yelled I only scared the birds.

Choose wisely

11. It was incredible to get to watch the Boston Celtics win their 18th championship, the most in NBA history. I’ve been lucky enough to see so many titles in various sports living in New England. I won’t take it for granted though. I lived through the Patriots being a joke. I lived through part of the Red Sox Curse of the Bambino. I also lived through the ML Carr years of the Celtics, although he did come and speak at my middle school so it wasn’t all bad. Congratulations to Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holliday who was the catalyst for this year’s team. Go Green!

In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 149: Boston's Very Own Music TV Station; When the Dot-Com Bubble Burst; Highest Rated TV Show Episodes Ever; Baseball's Origin(6-19-2024)

The brief time when Boston had it's own music television station. The financial catastrophe of the bursting of the dot-com bubble. The highest-rated television show episodes ever.
Episode 149 of the podcast turns up the heat with nostalgia as summer kicks off.
As MTV was conquering cable television in the early 1980s a Boston-based radio personality thought it would be a good idea to create a local music television station for young people that did not have cable access. The year was 1985. The station was V66. We kick off the show by looking back at this brief but fondly remembered channel.
It felt like everything in the dot-com world was golden for a short while. Sadly that was not the case and as the 21st century began the bubble burst and the landscape of internet business changed forever. We go way Back In the Day to when the Dot-Com Bubble Burst and the effects it had.
This week's Top 5 is actually a Top 10. We'll list the highest-rated television show episodes ever, with a few caveats of course. Did you watch any of these shows?
Of course there will be a new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the first baseball game ever played.

Initial Impressions 2.0 Blog - #21: Grampa's Donuts, Just Like Flanders, Stinky Footprints, etc.

1. Hole In One Donuts has 4 locations. There are 3 on Cape Cod including a new one that opened in Yarmouth at the end of May. My Grampa in his life operated several donut shops including one in Hyannis. When he was forced to close his shop in the early 1990s the place that bought his equipment was Hole In One. They make their donuts exactly the same way my Grampa used to. This week I bought a half-dozen from their new location. I brought these to my mother, stepfather, and sister so that they could eat Grampa’s donuts again. I highly recommend Hole In One.

2. I live within walking distance of a high school. This means I can walk down to the track to run. After a recent run, I climbed up into the bleachers to an enclosed area to sit for a few minutes. My mistake. There was a bird angrily tweeting as it was trying to build a nest in one of the corners. I sat for a few more minutes until the bird brought two more birds. By that time the numbers game was against me. I mean I could take one of those little fluff balls, but 3? I don’t know.

3. Two days a week I have to get up extra early to go to work. Typically I am up around 4:45am. That means the night before I am in bed early as well. I am popping melatonin at 7:30pm and drawing the blinds. It reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Bart, Lisa, and Maggie get sent to live with the Flanders. They end up in bed while it’s still sunny and kids are playing outside. That’s my Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

4. Is there a certain time of day/night when emergency vehicles don’t or won’t use their sirens? I have seen ambulances heading to a nearby retirement home after 10pm with no sirens going. Yet this week I heard sirens before 6am. Is there no rhyme or reason? Or is this just done on a case-by-case basis?

5. I was on a walk on a sunny afternoon on the bike trail. A young couple rode by with their son in the little rear trailer. The father turned and said something to me as he rode by. I could see his mouth move and he started to slow down. My first thought was uh-oh are we going to fight? Quite the opposite they were so sweet and asked which direction on the bike trail would get them to a beautiful spot first. I pointed them back the way they came and told them to go about 2 miles. They were so grateful and I was happy I helped someone instead of a random bike trail fight.

6. At my work we are working with something called metabolic breath analysis. The company’s name is PNOE(Greek for breath). Before we roll it out to our patients we all have had to do both the resting and active metabolic tests. The gist of the testing is that you are given results for 23 biological markers in your body as well as ways to improve them. Highly valuable stuff. My favorite stat to come from the tests is biological age. It’s a good view of how well you’ve lived up to that point. I am 13 years younger biologically than chronologically. So I am well on my way to living to 100.

7. I was driving from Sandwich to Yarmouth on Rt. 6A the other day when it began to rain. When I say ‘rain’ I mean it went from a few drops to an ocean on the streets in a minute. It was one of the hardest downpours I’ve ever been in and makes it easy to see how cars can get suddenly inundated with water in a flash flood. Then just as quickly as it was insanity it was over. A wild ride.

8. I buy so many of the same products and visit Stop & Shop so often that I sadly know when prices are lower for these things at different locations. At a store probably half an hour from where I live I started noticing the differences. First I was like ‘Oh man everything is cheaper here.’ Then it morphed into ‘Oh man I have memorized prices for the things I buy.’ I didn’t know whether to pat myself on the back for having a good memory or hang my head in embarrassment that this type of info is what I fill my limited brain cells with.

9. A clean gym is a happy gym. The gym I work at? Clean. The gym I’m a member at? Not so much. The latest adventure was a urinal being out of order leading me to have to use a stall. No biggie right? That was until next to the toilet in the stall was a nice smear of poop on the floor. To top it off there was a sliding footprint meaning someone slipped in it. Me? I had to use my memories of playing Twister to avoid the hazard but still hit the toilet. That’ll be a fun job for whoever has to clean it.

Not too far off from the gym bathroom

10. Cape Cod in the summer equals people backing out of their driveway into the street without hesitating despite you driving toward them. I think it’s the same ratio of stupid people as in the off-season it just is a larger number based on how many people come down to visit. Hell, even the birds forget what they’re doing. I had a bird in the road ahead as I drove, not fast, but instead of it flying to either side of my car, or you know up into the air, it flew at my car underneath it. All I saw in my rearview was feathers.
