In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 247: Richard Scarry Children's Books, Daytime Talk Shows History, Highest Rated 1990s Movies(6-3-2026)

Episode 247 ushers in June with a summertime bonanza of GenX nostalgia.

We kick it off with a journey to Busytown. Generations of kids have grown up with Richard Scarry and his children's books. Friendly animals, unique stories, hide-and-seek illustrations, and so much more make up the more than 200 books Scarry released during his life.

A staple of sick days in the 1980s and 1990s, besides Price Is Right and ginger ale, was daytime talk shows. Enlightening and informative sometimes, these shows often devolved into chaos, shouting matches, and fights. We do a little overview of the history of daytime talk shows, from the classy and respectful to the grimy and embarrassing.

It will be a special Top 10 instead of the traditional Top 5. We will be looking at the highest-rated movies from the 1990s. This is based on ratings from critics, audiences, and overall box office performance through the IMDb website.

There is, as always, a brand-new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring the life and career of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood.

Summer is unofficially here, and Episode 246 of the podcast brings a fresh batch of nostalgia unlikely to spoil in the hot sun.

Cue up the dog pound because we're starting off with a look back at the unique and highly influential Arsenio Hall Show. It broke barriers and broke the rules of late-night talk shows. Arsenio's show felt like something created for the younger generation at the time, and we will get into the details.

Here they come. They could have been a quirky 1960s footnote, but instead, The Monkees made an unlikely and hugely successful comeback twenty years after they debuted. What started as a marathon of their hit TV show on MTV in 1986 soon became a full-fledged return of Monkee-Mania.

The Top 5 is focusing on the lesser remembered and underrated moments from the 1980s. Pop culture, sports, music, and technology are all represented this week.

Famous and infamous tabloid talk shows. Some of the myths you believed growing up. How school was different in the 1980s.
Episode 160 of the podcast is a trip back in time as kids go back to school.
It begins with some shows that might have been on rotation during school sick days in the 80s. With the recent death of pioneering talk show host Phil Donohue we take a look at his revolutionary show as well as some of the other tabloid-style talk shows that he helped usher in during the 1980s.
Iconic author Edgar Allan Poe said, “Believe nothing you hear and only one half that you see.” This goes double for myths you believed as kids. We go way Back In the Day to discuss some of these myths from the innocent(the moon is chasing the car), to the more ominous(gum stays in your stomach for 7 years).
In honor of Back to School this week's Top 5 looks at some ways that school was different in the 1980s compared to the present day. From technology to fashion, and some actual education, it's all here.
