Initial Impressions 2.0 Blog #68: Bonfire, Odd Cemeteries, Serial Killer Training, etc.

1. Every time I think I’ve seen everything something else wacky happens. I was sitting at the beach on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It was just a perfect day and I was listening to a podcast and enjoying the spring air. I thought at one point I noticed some smoke from an area straight ahead on the sand but there were people around and I was not paying that close of attention. That was until the fire department showed up. It was then that I noticed an old lady is a red sweater and plaid pajama pants waving them over and pointing to where I had seen the smoke. According to another bystander who was explaining it to a car parked near me the lady had called the fire department on a group of people with a small fire going. Not sure if it was for cooking or just relaxing next to but the firefighters chatted calmly with them and the fire was put out. I stayed a half hour longer and the old lady and the group of people were all still there so I don’t think there was a problem after but who know for sure.

2. I am a slacker when it comes to transcribing my podcasts. I know they help people find your show in searches and such but it can be tedious and you typically need to pay for sites to do it. Occasionally I find free trials to allow me to get an episode or two transcribed but that’s it. So when I found a site that has so far allowed me to transcribe nearly 30 shows for free you bet your ass I’m just shoving the files into that site assembly line style. I’m going to go until they either shut me down or I transcribe them all. If you’re interested the link is here: https://restream.io/tools/transcribe-audio-to-text

3. There is a cemetery located near where my friend Mike and I do our Monday Runday exercise. If we get tired of running around the school track we will sometimes go for a run through that cemetery. What makes this run unique is not the cemetery itself but how the cemetery is laid out. If you run all of the paved routes in and around the cemetery you get a surprise if you are recording your run on a fitness app. It turns out that the cemetery’s lay out is shaped like a hand extending its middle finger. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. Now it is a fun part of some runs because I can share the satellite image afterward and get some laughs.

The cemetery layout I couldn't make up.

4. The vast vast majority of people who come into my day job are great people, like 99%. It is an easy task to work with so many good people who are looking for help getting healthy. That fact makes the bad ones stand out far more. There is one guy I hope is just a memory soon. He’s vaguely racist, vaguely homophobic, and definitely creepy. He looks like a lobotomized Art Carney, with big bulging eyes and a voice that gets really quiet when he wants to say something disturbing. The best part of seeing him is the sight of the door closing behind him as he leaves.

5. A few months ago I wrote about how my recommended videos on Facebook were all hydraulic presses crushing stuff and super hot metal balls being placed on or in different things. It was an odd combo but one that was a self-fulfilling prophecy since I’d keep clicking these videos when they popped up. Well I have an update now. I don’t know how these topics first got suggested to me but currently my Facebook Reels feed is filled with people removing beehives and videos of old super dirty and gross cars getting power-washed. I also have just found out there is apparently a game called PowerWash Simulator where you play as someone who runs a power washing business. I cannot promise you I won’t go watch videos of people playing it.

Yes this is a real game

6. This week we had to move some unused gym equipment into storage at my day job. It had to be hauled outside and put into the back of my boss’ van. I am one that I have always had a sarcastic sense of humor. My Nana used to say we were ‘sharp’ on that side of the family. I try to be quick with witty and funny quips. I might have crossed a line this week though. As I walked through the lobby at work carrying a 100 pound punching bag over my shoulder I remarked to the people who were watching that I was practicing to be a serial killer, I’d already gotten the carrying of the body down. I think(hope) they knew I was joking but if I get a cop knocking on my door asking about unsolved murders I’ll know someone in that lobby took me seriously.

7. I was excited this week to see that Buzzsprout, the site that hosts my podcast, was allowing you to have a transcript of your episodes for free, at least temporarily. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a slacker when it comes to transcripts so I’m taking full advantage. The funny part of this entry is that when you get the transcript, you can go in and edit it naturally. It can divide the transcript up by different speakers which is a cool feature. That being said I host my show by myself so theoretically the AI shouldn’t be detecting any other speakers. All of my transcripts have at least 2 speakers detected with one show having 11. Eleven speakers?! I mean I can do some different voices but really. I had to go into each episode and discard the different speakers feature, but otherwise, it’s been a huge help for me.

8. This is the time of year where I am torn. Not about anything important but about getting my car washed. I have a white car and where I park it gets caked in pollen and other various debris during the spring. I always need to wash it but the issue is spending money at the car wash only to have it covered in filth again by the next morning. I don’t know what a good ratio is. Do I wash it once a week, every other week? Or do I never wash it and let the rain do the job? That’s bad news when we have a dry spell, my car looks like it’s been abandoned in a field for years.

9. I was hanging at the beach one afternoon this week. It was cloudy but you could tell the weather was shifting and the sun was on its way. Once it came out I took a nice walk by the water, soaking in the scenery. Rather than going back to my car I sat at a table near the snack bar area. It’s not open yet and neither are the bathrooms. A few minutes later, a man drove into the parking lot in a Mustang. Not a new one but an early 2000s one that looked beat to hell, including a torn-up and taped sunroof. He parked way far away and walked all the way over just to find out the bathrooms were closed. I was surfing my phone so I hadn’t paid attention until I heard him pull on the door. He then started talking to me about nearby construction and I tried to be polite but really didn’t care. I just wonder why he parked 200 feet away when there were open spots next to the bathrooms, quicker road to disappointment.

10. According to my mother, I have been on a hot streak with my gifts for special occasions over the last few years. For Mother’s Day I had to keep my streak. Months ago my mom mentioned how much she missed her butterfly bush that had been outside of the living room window for years. I filed that away specifically for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, I have little knowledge of plants. Luckily I went to a local place, Hart Farm in Dennis, where my mom took us kids for years especially to get corn. They directed me to the exact butterfly bush I needed. My gift streak is alive and well.

The butterfly bush I got my mom for mother's day

11. Speaking of Mother’s Day I have been fortunate to have many strong female presences in my life who are mothers. My Nina and Nana, my sisters Kate and Lindsay, my Aunts Kelly, Susan, and Emma. There are also loads of friends. However, nobody can hold a candle to my mother. She has always been my biggest supporter. I feel a lot of the time that I am working hard on chasing my dreams to validate her support. She dealt with a few less-than-stellar men in her life, unfortunately, one is my father. She also went to school full-time at night to become a nurse while also working full-time and raising 5 kids between 8-15 years old. There are many times that I sit and wish I could do more for her but until that time I figure that being a decent responsible person is a fair enough tribute.

In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 194: Goth v. Grunge In the 90s, Food Mascots With Video Games, 1960s Teen Idols(5-7-2025)

The differences between Grunge and Goth culture in the 1990s. Some food items or mascots that had their own video games. A few of the teen idols and queens of the 1960s.

Episode 194 gives you your weekly dose of the Gen-X nostalgia buffet!

We kick things off by comparing and contrasting two subcultures that 90s high schoolers might have known or might have been. Grunge and Goth seemed similar but how similar were they really? We'll dive deep into both of them, including what it was like as a Grunge kid in high school in the 90s.

Some strange subjects end up as video games. We go way back in the day to look at food mascots and food items that were turned into video games. There are also a few scrapped ones that you have to hear to believe.

This week's Top 5 is all about teen idols and teen queens of the 1960s. These were the celebrities that the youth of America gravitated toward. How did their careers turn out though?

There is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the fascinating discovery of the Tollund Man.

Initial Impressions 2.0 Blog #67: Monday Runday, Social Media Stalkers, 5K Fun, etc.

1. It was the return of Monday Runday this week. That is where I get out of work, meet my friend Mike at a local school track, and run or walk. It is so much fun, especially when the weather is good. The return of this fun event was not without its challenges. Mainly, it was do I beat the hell out of a selfish, entitled dog owner. I took a detour off of the track to find a porta-potty. Once done there I took a long lap around the school. It was here that I was met with a dog running free while its idiot owners just watched. I yelled repeatedly to get their dog while it ran around me. I kept running but made sure to toss several F words at the moron dude who stood there leaking brain cells on the ground. It did get my adrenaline pumping but man, stupid people.

2. A new piece of training equipment I got to try this week is resistance training for your lungs. It is a mouth guard with a valve attached to it. You can adjust the valve to restrict your oxygen intake. The gist of it is that if you have to breathe twice(or more) as hard as normal to get a full breath then when you’re exercising in reality, you’ll have far more stamina. I suppose you could use it to strengthen your lungs just for daily life as well. My hope is that using it will leads to more stamina running while my calf wedge will allow me to run longer due to increased ankle and calf mobility. We shall see.

3. I don’t know if it is an example of the Mandela effect or if it’s just me, but how did it take me to my late 40s to realize that Tom the Cat from Tom & Jerry was gray during the first years of the cartoons? I thought he was always blue, but it turns out he was gray for a lot of the time. Maybe my sense of color was different when watching the cartoons as a kid? Maybe I am putting way too much thought into 80-year-old cartoons? But also what else from my childhood am I ‘misremembering’ as Roger Clemens once said?

How did I not notice Tom was gray?

4. There are plenty of times over the last few years when I feel like I am working on so many different projects and making minimal progress on each. Typically, my content itinerary consists of podcasts, videos, blogs, and various social media posts to promote all of those. I have also been working for months on a website for my podcast. This is the project that feels like I am making little progress on. Usually it’s because the rest of the content takes precedence. As we speak, I am working on loading in all of the links I’ve shared in 194(and counting) episodes, along with all of the old shows and artwork. You can see that it’s slow going based on the fact that I chose to stop that work to continue this blog. I’m sure the site will be up before my podcast ends, pretty sure.

5. I always find it weird and a bit off-putting when a random stranger likes a photo or post of mine on social media that dates back several years. Like how much are you stalking my pages to find something that far back when I have hundreds, if not thousands of posts? It’s especially creepy on Instagram, where I have nearly 6,000 posts. If you’re that big of a fan to go years back in my archives, then go support me on Patreon, if you’re just a weirdo stalker, then please make yourself known so I can block you.

6. My 5K race this weekend left me shocked and speechless in the best possible way. I had only semi-trained. I looked at this race as a kind of barometer of where I went with running afterward. My goals were twofold. Don’t get hurt, and finish the 5K(3.1 miles) in less than 35 minutes. I ended up beating my goal by more than 6 minutes, and actually beating my last 5K time by a good 45 seconds. To say I am shocked is an understatement. I was tired for sure but I set a pace from the start and barely wavered. As a runner, sometimes the hardest thing to do is run your race and not change your plan based on others around you. I fell victim to that more times than I can count. For some reason in this race, I felt like it was just me against myself, and it turned out better than I could have imagined.

7. The race was the Dennis Chamber 5K. It started and ended at the beautiful Mayflower Beach, which is on the bay side. This marked the 4th time I ran a race on this course. It’s relatively easy, there are a couple of hills but nothing that any average runner hasn’t seen before. This year’s race had about 250 people, so we were packed like sardines at the beginning. At my peak I used to line up right on the starting line and would take off in a flash. Now I tend to be in the middle of the pack. The faster people take off out of sight, while I still can pass my fair share of slower people who don’t understand that they need to be in the back of the group. There was music, free food, water, a potential free lunch afterward. It was a fun and festive time made all the better by my surpassing my own expectations.

8. I took pride in my outfit for the race. I had an idea for it in my head and had to hope for the weather to cooperate because a rainy day would put the kibosh on my setup. Luckily, it ended up being sunny and around 60 for the race. This meant that I was able to go all out. I had some styling powder from a company named Level 3. It’s great stuff, you can use it on your dry hair. So I spiked up my hair I’ve been growing for the last few months. This didn’t go off without a hitch, as when I opened the container of the powder, I did manage to spill some on my black shirt and shorts. Smooth. Then I had a killer headband from the Junk company. It was blue and black Hippie skulls. Combined with sunglasses, it was a great look. Things went off without a hitch until a few hours after the race. This is when I looked at myself in the mirror and saw that, thanks to the headband, I had a very specific red area on my face. The headband and sunglasses covered my forehead and eyes, so I ended up with what boiled down to a red line about ¼” wide going across my forehead right above my eyebrows. Nice. It was still a good look though.

You can see where I might have gotten red...

9. The weather has been perfect especially over the weekend. It was time to throw open all of the windows and get that spring air flowing through my space. Of course this is the time then that the next door neighbor has a thorough cleanup done on their yard. This was complete with a backpack blower going nearly nonstop for close to 2 hours. It was the ultimate background music for me trying to edit my podcast. I ended up having to close my windows just like it was January again. Booo.

10. In this day and age I rarely have cash on me. I rely on my debit card for all purchases. Only when an issue arises do I wish we were still in the cash days. I was in a supermarket and only when I was at the self-checkout did I realize that the card reader was having issues. I had cash on me but only $5. I wasn’t going to leave my stuff, go run to an ATM, and then come back to pay the rest. After close to 10 minutes of trying and failing a different employee came over and suggested I try the ‘tap’ option. I had done it several times with no luck but to humor her I did one last time. Lo and behold it worked. I was so relieved and said she was a good luck charm. I then bumped into a few people I knew. I felt so good when leaving that I took that $5 and gave it to a group of little girls collecting money for their dance academy. Good karma for me.

Just a little spring photo to end the blog.

In My Footsteps Podcast Episode 193: The Legend of Lawn Chair Larry, ABC After School Specials, Briefly Famous People From the 1970s(4-30-2025)

The movie Up in real life? After school specials that taught and traumatized? Some briefly famous people from the 1970s?

Episode 193 of the podcast dives into all of that Gen-X nostalgia.

It kicks off with a look back at ABC's After School Specials. These hour-long films shared life lessons with kids from the 1970s through the 1990s. We do a deep dive into these TV shows from their purpose to some of the most well-known episodes.

The movie Up is an engaging and exciting animated film about a man who uses balloons to float his house away. Something like that is fiction, right? Yes and no. It wasn't a house that balloons took away. It was a man in a lawn chair. We go way back in the day to 1982 and discuss the incredible but true story of Lawn Chair Larry.

15 minutes of fame sometimes is just long enough. This week's Top 5 looks at some people who had their brush with fame in the 1970s and then virtually disappeared. Athletes, actors, musicians, and more. Do you remember these briefly famous people?

There is also a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule that looks back at the end of Lou Gehrig's streak of consecutive games played in baseball.

2003: My Life In Poetry Form - Throwback Thursday

This is a weekly recurring series featuring five poems all written within the same calendar year. They capture a sense of what my life and mind were like at a certain age and show the evolution of my life, mind, and writing style. We return to 2003. I was 25 years old. This was a time featuring a lot of soul-searching and trying to figure out what my path in life was supposed to be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

End Of The Long Day

When was the last time life was this good?
When did everything happen as you wished it would?
The sun has always set and the sun will always rise, now look again at the sun through opened eyes. Things once moving slow are right on time. Thoughts and feelings make sense even without rhyme. Every hand has a hand, every head has a shoulder to lean on. Every wish seems possible, all hopes and desires so dream on.
When was the last time it all fell into place?
All those blank and blurry road maps in focus,
no more secrets that can hurt us.
We’re all still turning, time keeps us moving, there’s always a reason to find understanding. Calm is common, relax without losing sight, everyone is safe tonight. The fresh air breezes in a whisper, raindrops kissing on our cheeks.
Peaceful sleep is calling, the long days work is ending, all colors and sands of the landscape behind your eyes.
When was the last time life was this beautiful?
Only a gentle smile and kind word for brother and sister. These days are for living, loving, giving back what you feel.
It’s all here now, wake up into the dream.

Keep Rolling

A glandular condition, can’t figure out what you’re missing.
An overactive imagination, can’t turn up the volume on this radio station.
Like a rolling cowboy in the wild west, keeps rolling on and rolling over til he’s cleared out all the rest.

Don’t stand on the highway if you can run through the parking lot.
Don’t stop rolling til you’ve rolled right over anything standing in your way.
Don’t try to walk on water when you can live knee deep in the stream.
Don’t you mind the mindless. Don’t try to convert the faithless. Don’t stop rolling on until it’s left you breathless.

A positionary mission, can’t find rebellion underneath tradition.
Broken dreams, broken backs, off the beaten path,
derailed off the tracks.
Inspiration, perspiration, the price of a hundred incarnations.
Mark the ground but make no sound,
there is an escape to be found.
Schizophrenic love, bi-polar heart, the pills in my happiness cocktail, whatever it takes I will keep on rolling.

The Lady Sits In Silence

The lady sits in silence. Sounds of her laughter are just memories. Unable to be who she used to be. The lady sits in silence forevermore. There once was a time, in the past where it lies, when this lady did sparkle like sun diamonds on the water. Her sea is gray and cold, did not want to hear what she was told, a smile only in my mind forever more. It saddens me thinking of how it used to be not long ago, when bliss was ignorance and my wishes tucked softly under my skin. Where did the carefree soul end and the shackled spirit begin? I see a beautiful face now cut angry in stone. Eyes of blue sky see nothing but ground. What happens to that smile when I am around? No words to be spoken, a promise of pain unbroken, to my ears the lady is silent forevermore. I would take back my love for this curse to be lifted. I would stand swimming in these emotions, let my face to her become untwisted. The lady sits in silence, though many swear she speaks. My love for her is reviled, the sickness of hatred leaves me lonely and weak. I pray for a word. I pray for an end. The lady is soft and broken waiting for her heart to mend. There are those around wondering why. Was it me who made her cry? Did my love break her? A beautiful place I can never take her. Where is the justice in the emotion’s simplicity? I beg for her to raise her head, see there is no demon inside of me. Yet days and weeks pass breathlessly, for those who look at but do not see. The lady sits in silence and it is her silence that is killing me.
-------------------------------------

Wringing Out The Darkness

I can’t write anymore, all of my stories have been told.
I won’t fight anymore, I’m walking away before I get too old.
I can’t cry anymore, those tears don’t inspire like they used to.
I won’t lie anymore, I’m going to be who I am and now I’m breaking through.

Some memories fade, others won’t let me walk away, but this time I’m going to make it through the storm. Some worries may come and go, some may come and stay, I won’t let them sink my ship come what may. Coming back from the brink of all the old faults seems so passé, living my life while alive is the best way to survive.

I can’t pretend anymore, my face will have to be the one worn on and worn out.
I won’t defend anymore, I let this go on too long before learning what it was about. I can’t comprehend anymore, how I made it this far with half a heart and a soul in chains. I won’t regret anymore,
a new life starts when each sunrise calls my name.

All of the running, all of the hiding, all my time eyes closed to the world ends with my surviving. In the end it only matters where you are. It says so much and tells me so little. The only world you know is the world you go and see. Piecing myself back together as the darkness runs out of me like unholy water. Living my life while alive in the world is where I’m going to be.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
